If you are wondering why it's been taking me so long to finish Angel of Death, this is why. I blame
bethmccombs , with all the talk of Criminal Minds. She did this to me. It's her fault, I tell you!
Now that I know where I'm going with this, more or less, I can get back to business. But as soon as Angel is finished....
Becoming Human
As his body falls through the Time Lock he looks back and sees him die. He sees him trade his life for an old man with maybe one more decade left in him, feels the pain and the sorrow tearing through him, and it makes him so angry that he pushes back against the chronon tide, throwing everything he is against it.
Astonishingly, it gives way and he slips through, screaming in agony as his body is torn away and he’s sucked down Earth’s gravity well. In desperation he searches for something – someone – to cushion his fall. He’s not hard to find. The freak’s life signature is like a million million suns compressed into a diamond, and he had a year to study each single facet. It amuses him to think of living inside one of his favorite pets, immortality assured, no final death, ever.
He laughs, but the laugh turns to a scream when he finally sees what lies at the heart of the diamond. The wolf slaps him aside with a negligent swipe of the paw, and he is flung into darkness.
And then the sound comes.
Even though now he knows what it is, he still cringes when he hears it. He tries to cover his ears, shut it out, but it is inside him, and he moans in terror. Suddenly the wolf is there, its Vortex-eyes examining him, digging into each thought, each dream, each life. The paw comes up again but instead of a blow there's a caress.
“For his sake,” she says. “Go. Live.”
He is plunged into a maelstrom of fire. Everything burns away, everything is stripped from him. He is reduced to thought and dream. He swears his revenge and the wolf laughs. This time, the paw connects with what in a physical body would be the side of his head.
When he awakens, he is in a strange city. Sirens are ringing in the distance. He looks up to see charred paper float down. He catches a piece in his hand. He sees the blood in his palm, feels it running from his ears. Something, maybe a sound, makes him turn. A car is on fire. Suddenly the noise is loud and it send knives stabbing into his eardrums.
A young, bearded man runs up to him. “Sir, are you all right?”
He struggles to understand and decides not to. “What's your name?”
“What?”
“What's your name?” he insists.
“Sam.”
“Call 911. Call 911 and tell them there's been an explosion".
