Stupidity
"The will to be stupid is a very powerful force, but there are always alternatives."
Lois McMaster Bujold

This makes me angry.

What in hell is wrong with people? The bloody Internet is big enough to hold all of us. We don't even have to acknowledge each other if we don't want to.
You like CoE? Fine, go to it. You hate Gwen? Your privilege. I don't give a flying flip. You don't like what I write? Don't read. It's as simple as that. Considering how many of us are writing Torchwood, and how many variations of Ianto there are, it's hard to believe that people have to try to force writers to conform to their ideal.

You have an ideal? You write it, you cowardly jerk. Lay it out for everyone's criticism. Be willing to accept whatever comes your way. Hundreds of us do. Have the balls that God gave a mouse and jump into the real fray. Learn what it is to work hard to perfect a craft for the sheer pleasure of it, to be willing to give up evenings and weekends to doing something as if you were a professional, which most of us will never be, or even want to be. Get out of your fever swamp. Come on, I dare you.

Amen to this.

It just bothers me when people try to tell a person what to write. If you don't like it, simply avoid it! It's not that hard. And people who PM their responses, instead of commenting for everyone to see, are simply cowards.

Bravo! You tell'em, girl! No one should dictate how people write!

You know they're probably jealous that they can't write as awesomely as Beth, you, milday, and a whole bunch of other people that I could name...or that or they have really small balls and are trying to compensate. Either way I hope bad things happen to them on a karmic level.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph in a bathtub!

I cannot believe people would try to dictate to a person on THEIR OWN JOURNAL what they should be writing. That is just so many shades of WRONG it's untrue.

And just what is wrong with AUs? I love them - as if you couldn't tell from the fact that 80% of the stuff I write is crossovers. No-one has ever told me what I should be writing, but if they did, they'd be told in no uncertain terms to shove it where the sun don't shine. Ideas and suggestions however, when made politely or in a friendly manner, are always welcome.

AUs not your cup of tea? Then don't bloody well read them, you stupid, brainless, vindictive BULLIES. Hit the back key and don't be harassing a writer how has got the imagination to come up with something you couldn't even dream about.

And now I'm off my own soapbox, well said my dear. As you can tell, I whole heartedly agree with you!

It never ceases to amaze me at times the way people feel a freedom to express themselves on sites, because they are not face to face with the other person, school playground bully just about covers it. i am a great believer in if you do't like the way a fic portrays a character, JUST DON'T READ IT, personally I think that's simple. On the second point your fiction is fab and anyway as a reader who is a crap writer, I have always taken the approach of positive crits or keep my mouth shut if I don't like the direction a fic is taking after all, I don't like a book I put it down and then leave it after all online or paper it is the author's story to tell, mine to absorb.

No one has any right to dictate the direction another person's creativity should follow. Fanfiction is about writing the stories that interest the writer - we write primarily for ourselves and if others enjoy what we write, that's lovely. If they don't they should either not bother to read in the first place, or at least have the decency not to try to inflict their own views on the author. It makes my blood boil!

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it..." (Allegedly by Voltaire) is a quote that those people took completely backwards!

A shame, indeed, especially seeing that she is a mighty fine writer, whom I recomanded to friends who wanted to be sure to read well written fanfic so as to improve their English.

I respect her decision, I sympathise, but I hope you will not give up for the same reasons?

Huh. I don't get it. This is also the second person I know of who pretty much stopped writing TW fics b/c of hurtful comments regarding her fics. And considering she writes mostly Ianto-centric fics with a healthy side of Janto, I have to assume it is b/c she writes Ianto in a very AU way. Makes me glad I tend to stay under most people's radar when I write Ianto.

I have never understood ship or character wars. It's just one of those things that baffles me. As you stated, if you don't like a character or a pairing, don't read it.

But then, people are stupid.

Agree, agree, oh I so agree with your point of view. The internet allows people to be anonymous-a safe cover-to post stupid remarks and criticism-they are cowards to the max. Kind of think of it as a control thing-they can bully another, get away with it and it makes them feel powerful...yet in reality they are cowards with no self esteem.

I'm really shocked to see this. You know I've never read any of these stories, but I'll check them out. I don't understand why would anyone send her a pm about her stories? Surely that's what the comment feature is for. Shame she didn't disable her pm's after the first one. Thing is, if I didn't like them, I wouldn't read them, simple as that. I don't quite get why she is being harassed, surely lots of AUs feature Ianto?
Merucha[personal profile] merucha on May 19th, 2011 07:16 pm (UTC)
I don't know all the details, but it seems that someone was very upset that she didn't like CoE and preferred to write AUs. It escalated from there.

ext_41651[identity profile] fide-et-spe.livejournal.com on May 19th, 2011 07:25 pm (UTC)
Bloody Hell. I have a comm which was dedicated to those who didn't like CoE and I know there are others, but I never got one negative PM or comment on the comm at all. It's so strange how some people end up getting hassled, really unfair as well.

if the sender of the flames doesn't like au then the moment they see the word back out and go read something else. beth clearly labels her works. i enjoy everything she has written and hope she is back soon.
