There was no doubt that Anne Cavanaugh was a de Gray; she had the height, the honey-blond hair, and the sharp Norman features. But where Leonora seemed carved out of the finest ivory, Anne was more like plastic. A flawed copy of the real thing.
“Anne, why are you doing this?” Leonora held herself like a princess. “Where is Alexander?"

I shivered at the amount of power behind those two simple words. This was the first time I had seen Jack at work, and the difference between the lovely bloke who was going to marry my brother and the Swordbearer was absolutely staggering.

CHAPTER ONE: GWEN
Detective Inspector Gwen Cooper of the Cardiff Major Crimes Unit stared at the lights of the spaceport that crouched like a poisonous spider at the edge of the bay. Even the Christmas lights festooning the buildings couldn't relieve their menacing air. Maybe the earthfirsters are right and we should stay home and mind our own business. She realized she had spoken out loud when she heard her partner snort.
“We're not the stay at home types, Gwen,” Andy handed her a steaming cup. “Humans always want to see what's on the other side of the mountain. Or the galaxy.”

Note: There is in fact an old synagogue, rather beautiful, at 13a Cathedral Road in Cardiff. It's now an office building. The Jewish population of (real) Cardiff is small and in the early 2000s built a newer place consolidating several congregations. I really like the one on Cathedral Road, so I appropriated it. Sue me.
Note: Rabbi, rav, and rebbe all are variations of the same word but have different usages. In this case, Jack (and others) call the Rabbi rav as a sign of respect.
